Robert W. Berliner, a CPA and Certified Fraud Examiner, is a Senior Consultant in the Litigation and Corporate Financial Advisory Services Group at Marks Paneth & Shron LLP. In this capacity, he is responsible for consulting with litigators, providing expert testimony and supervising a support team of senior CPAs with extensive litigation services experience. With more than five decades of experience to his credit as an auditor as well as an accounting expert and managing partner, Mr. Berliner is frequently sought out by the legal profession for his expertise in securities fraud, accounting malpractice, post-acquisition disputes, forensic accounting and fraud investigation. He has worked on numerous high-profile cases, and is one of the few CPAs to have testified against the SEC on behalf of an auditor in a Rule 2(e) proceeding and to have also served as the SEC’s accounting expert in yet another Rule 2(e) case.

Mr. Berliner is the founder of the Litigation and Corporate Financial Advisory Services practice at Marks Paneth & Shron and has played an integral role in its growth over the years. He joined the firm in 1990, bringing with him national and international experience as a partner in a “Big Eight” firm and as a partner for another national accounting firm where he managed the National and New York Office accounting and auditing technical groups. In addition, he has been an Adjunct Professor of Accounting at New York University's Stern School of Business. This collective experience has helped him not only to develop the technical skills needed to win cases but also the ability to educate legal professionals and juries by explaining complex accounting concepts in non-technical language. Mr. Berliner and his team adhere to the principles of providing reliable, responsive service.

Mr. Berliner has extensive involvement in professional matters. He has served as the Chairman of the Auditing Standards and Procedures Committee of the New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA). He has also served on many other professional committees and task forces within the accounting profession. He is a former member of the AICPA’s Auditing Standards Board, the FASB’s Emerging Issues Task Force and the NYSSCPA’s Professional Ethics Committee of which he was chairman.

A frequent author and lecturer, Mr. Berliner has spoken at numerous conferences and published many articles in leading business and professional journals.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Mr. Berliner is an active volunteer and supporter of the arts. At present, he serves as Treasurer and as a Member of both the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of his Cooperative Association. He has donated much time and attention to the New Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey where he has served as a Chairman of the Finance Committee and a Member of the Board of Trustees.

Mr. Berliner holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration from New York University. He is based at Marks Paneth & Shron’s midtown headquarters in New York City and resides in Manhattan.
