NONPROFIT BOARDS RECEIVE MIXED REVIEWS IN LATEST MARKS PANETH SURVEY

August 28, 2017

New York, NY (August 28, 2017) –  The most recent edition of Nonprofit Pulse, a national survey of nonprofit leaders and executives undertaken by leading accounting, tax and advisory firm Marks Paneth LLP, asked survey respondents to rate their board across a variety of categories.

While overall board turnover was low, respondents to the Summer 2017 survey indicated that there was room for improvement among their experienced board members. Based on a five-point scale, boards were rated in the following categories:

  • Mission alignment (4.1)
  • Organization oversight (3.7)
  • Financial strategy (3.5)
  • Community relations (3.0)
  • Board diversity (2.7)
  • Fundraising effectiveness (2.7)

Using correlation analysis, the survey also found that organization oversight, financial strategy and fundraising effectiveness had the most significant impact on overall board performance ratings.

“With the majority of nonprofit leaders expecting industry conditions to deteriorate in the next 12 months, the role of board members has never been more vital,” says Hope Goldstein, Co-Partner-in-Charge of the Nonprofit, Healthcare & Government Group at Marks Paneth. “The importance of oversight, financial strategies and effective fundraising support cannot be emphasized enough.”

The survey also explores nonprofit leaders’ views of public and private funding sources, the burden of SROI, and the most frequently utilized fundraising strategies.
